Europeans must develop their own peace plan for Ukraine and stop relying on the Americans to take the initiative, European Commissioner for Defence Andrius Kubilius told Euronews’ Europe Today programme on Tuesday.
We probably need to get over some of our mental challenges as usually we’re waiting when a few ideas will come from Washington,” Kubilius pointed out. It would be pretty beneficial for us to have our own strategy, which we could then compare to the American plan to see what was good and what we wanted to discuss,” he added.
I believe we’re headed in that way. Since this perspective that we need to be more independent in our defense capabilities as well as our geopolitical stature is coming,” he continued.
US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, are scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Tuesday afternoon to resume negotiations over resolving the war in Ukraine.
It comes after a fresh peace plan reportedly thrashed out by Washington and Moscow emerged last week, alarming Ukrainians and Europeans alike because it leaned decisively in Russia’s favour. The proposal called for Ukraine to yield the whole Donbas territory to Russia, limit the strength of its military, and abandon its ambitions to join NATO.
