A second phase of the US-brokered plan to end the war in Gaza is near, according to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. However, essential concerns still need to be settled.
As an international security force is deployed and a transitional authority is established, Israel should remove its troops from Gaza in accordance with the second phase of President Donald Trump’s proposal. Hamas is supposed to disarm so that rehabilitation may start.
One senior official has indicated that Hamas is prepared to think about “freezing or storing” its remaining weapons in light of the unresolved disarmament issues. Both sides have been under pressure from the United States and other mediators to move forward with Trump’s agenda.
In the Zeitoun neighborhood of Gaza City, a Red Cross team and members of Hamas’s armed wing are reportedly starting their search for police officer Sergeant Ran Gvili, the final Israeli hostage who has died.
According to the rules of the first ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, Gvili’s remains should be returned after he was murdered in the strikes led by Hamas on October 7, 2023. Netanyahu declared, “We’ll get him out, during a Sunday press conference.
Both sides are still accusing one another of nearly daily violations two months after the Gaza truce went into force. Over half of the Gaza Strip is still under Israeli control. In the remaining region, Hamas has essentially re-established itself.
