Palo Alto, California At its first “Autonomy and AI Day” on Thursday in Palo Alto, California, electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian Automotive announced that it has created a bespoke chip, car computer, and new artificial intelligence models that would allow it to include self-driving technologies into its upcoming vehicles.
Rivian’s stock dropped about 3% during the hour-long presentation, and it dropped even more on Thursday when OpenAI revealed its most sophisticated model to yet. Additionally, Rivian stated that it intends to launch an autonomous+ subscription with continuously expanding capabilities” for owners of its second-generation cars in early 2026. Rivian Autonomy Processors and autonomous computers will power this subscription.
The Autonomy+ option will start at $49.99 each month or cost $2,500 as a one-time upfront payment. In contrast, rival Tesla charges $8,000 up front or $99 a month with its premium FSD (Supervised) option.
During the hour-long session, RJ Scaringe, founder and CEO of Rivian, stated, “AI is enabling us to create technology and customer experiences at a rate that is completely different from what we’ve seen in the past.
