As part of a campaign against “hateful” slogans, the Australian state where Bondi was shot intends to outlaw the expression “globalise the intifada. The Premier of New South Wales (NSW), Chris Minns, has also demanded a Royal Commission to look into the Bondi incident, which was Australia’s bloodiest shooting in almost 30 years.
Last Sunday, two gunmen who are thought to have been inspired by “Islamic State ideology” opened fire on a Jewish holiday at the nation’s most famous beach, killing fifteen people and injuring dozens more. Since the assault, Australia’s federal and state governments have announced a number of initiatives to combat extremism.
Next week, Minns intends to initiate a recall of the state legislature to enact more stringent firearms and hate speech laws. In an effort to promote “a summer of calm,” he also hinted earlier this week that he would strengthen protest rules in order to reduce large-scale protests.
The premier declared that he will try to label the “globalize the intifada” shout as hate speech. On Wednesday, two pro-Palestinian demonstrators were detained for reportedly yelling intifada-related chants during a protest in central London.
