Overnight on Thursday, Russia launched a hypersonic Oreshnik missile attack on Ukraine, a rare deployment of one of its most sophisticated weapons during the most recent assault on the nation under bitter cold. The attack is the first time Moscow has used the Oreshnik, which has several warheads and can deliver conventional or nuclear payloads, in over a year.
The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed in a statement on Friday that “the Russian Armed Forces executed a massive strike with high-precision long-range land- and sea-based weapons, including the Oreshnik mobile medium-range ground-based missile system.
An earlier statement from the Air Command “West” of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine stated that the missile was “moving at a speed of about 13,000 kilometers per hour along a ballistic trajectory.” It further stated that the type of missile would be identified after examining its constituent parts. 13,000 km/h is around ten times the speed of sound. According to the head of Russia’s missile forces, the Oreshnik can travel at such speeds and has a range that covers all of Europe.
