In November, the UK Economy Expanded by 0.3%, Exceeding Projections

The UK economy expanded by 0.3 percent in November, beating expectations as car manufacturing recovered and the services sector saw a lift, according to the Office for National Statistics.

The rebound was largely driven by higher industrial output, helped by Jaguar Land Rover returning to production after a cyber-attack forced the company to shut its UK plants in September. Motor vehicle output jumped by 25.5 percent in November as production resumed in stages from October.

Service activity also increased during the month, with growth observed in areas such as accounting and tax consultancy. This increase coincided with the 26 November Budget, which appeared to support business-related services.

Economists said the stronger-than-expected figure was encouraging, although overall growth is still likely to remain modest. Suren Thiru, economics director at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, described the data as “unexpectedly upbeat”, noting that many sectors seemed to have moved past pre-Budget uncertainty. He added that November’s improvement makes it likely the economy recorded modest growth in the final quarter of 2025. Easing uncertainty after the Budget may also have supported activity in December, despite disruption caused by a widespread flu outbreak that affected sectors such as education.
