Wildfires in France Reveal Hundreds of WWII Shells in a Village

According to local authorities, wildfires in the southern region of France have exposed a cache of 400 antiquated shells and ammunition in the commune of Le Porge. The local fire commander told local media that explosions during the fires, which were first believed to be exploding gas cylinders, might have been World War Two explosives set off by the heat. Mayor Martial Zaninetti described the second night of the fire as “the sound of war” after hearing over 100 explosions, according to French news outlet France Info.

The majority of inhabitants have returned to their houses as a result of demining activities, although the mayor has stated that some sections are remain off-limits. The wildfire burned about 180 homes in the neighborhood.Zaninetti told France Info, “We were unaware that there were ammunition depots buried in land within our municipality, and they exploded.” He said they were moving “to the right, to the left” and that “even one that went through a house” was among them.
