Ferrari’s First Electric Vehicle Sold for a Record $40 Million

In a charity sale, Ferrari’s first electric automobile sold for $40 million (£29.5 million), a record for a new car sold at auction. At the event at RM Sotheby’s in California, the Ferrari Luce, designed by British iPhone designer Sir Jony Ive, was sold for more than 35 times its typical price. When the Luce was introduced in May, it was met with criticism. Some critics claimed that because it was battery-powered and had five seats, it deviated from the marque’s classic looks and lost some of the brand’s personality.

According to Sotheby’s, the Ferrari Foundation’s educational initiatives will get all of the sale’s revenues. The buyer of the handcrafted Luce, which has handmade pieces and a distinctive finish, was not identified by Sotheby’s. Ferrari and the auction company have been approached by the BBC for comment. One of the most significant new automobile debuts in recent years was the Luce’s introduction. It was the prancing horse’s first foray into the electric vehicle (EV) market, which is dominated by Chinese automakers and Elon Musk’s Tesla.
