Shortly after former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and senior European security officials had passed through, a Russian drone struck a train close to the Ukraine-Poland border. The strike at Yahodyn, which struck the train’s engine, resulted in no recorded injuries. According to Ukrainian authorities, every passenger had been evacuated. On their way back from a conference in Kyiv, Johnson and other European national security advisors, including Jonathan Powell of the UK, had travelled along the same route on a different train.
Ukraine’s state railway firm Ukrzaliznytsia stated that the drone’s target “could have been the diplomatic train” in contrast to Russia’s defence ministry’s claim that it had attacked “railway infrastructure” in western Ukraine. The chair of the Warsaw Security Forum, Professor Katarzyna Pisarska, told the BBC that she was in the same carriage as Johnson and Powell and that the attack occurred roughly half an hour after their train entered Poland.
The diplomatic train “had left the station earlier than expected because of the timetable change… due to constant threats of Russian strikes,” according to a statement from Ukrzaliznytsia, the railway authority of Ukraine. Additionally, it claimed that a Russian jet-propelled drone had issued an evacuation order for passengers aboard the struck train “just 15 minutes” prior to the attack.
