As President Donald Trump’s administration launches a new effort to combat cross-border drug trafficking, the United States levied penalties on Los Chapitos, a component of the Sinaloa Cartel, on Monday, designating it a Specially Designated Global Terrorist.
In a statement, the U.S. Treasury Department said it had placed Los Chapitos within the purview of terrorist and illegal drug authorities, charging it with aiding the manufacturing and trafficking of the deadly narcotic fentanyl. The Treasury Department also announced sanctions on two of its fugitive leaders, both sons of convicted Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.
In the release, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent added, “Los Chapitos is a powerful, hyperviolent faction of the Sinaloa Cartel at the forefront of fentanyl trafficking into the United States.
At the Treasury Department, we are carrying out President Trump’s directive to eradicate drug cartels and confront deadly leaders such as “El Chapo’s” children. Treasury is using every instrument at its disposal to assist in saving lives and end the fentanyl catastrophe. On Monday, the Treasury also penalised what it described as a regional network of Mexican-based Los Chapitos affiliates and companies.
The move on Monday prevents Americans from doing business with them in general and freezes any of their assets in the United States. Individuals who conduct specific transactions with the sanctioned parties run the risk of facing sanctions as well.
