US President Donald Trump claims that Israel and Hamas have “signed off on the first phase” of the 20-point peace plan he revealed last week, following three days of intense indirect negotiations in Egypt.
He said on social media, “This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line as the first steps toward a Strong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace,” without delving deeper into the specifics of the first phase.
It occurs two years and two days after the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on southern Israel, which claimed over 1,200 lives and resulted in the hostage-taking of 251 more.
According to Gaza’s health ministry, which Hamas manages, this led to a huge Israeli military offensive that has killed over 67,100 people. The United Nations and other international organizations consider its data to be accurate.
Israel’s security cabinet will approve the plan’s initial step on Thursday night, and the entire cabinet will then vote on it. A truce will begin as soon as the Israeli cabinet formally approves the accord, which is anticipated. Although a prime minister’s office spokeswoman stated that it will start within 24 hours of the cabinet’s consent, reports in Israeli media indicate that this will happen right now.
