Officially, all investigations into a spate of gun and fire assaults at French prisons remain open. This indicates that the police have not ruled out foreign powers like Algeria or Russia or the extreme left.
However, in retaliation for the government’s most recent campaign, there is growing belief that the attacks 12 since Sunday night can only have been carried out by drug gangs. The administration itself undoubtedly holds that view.
“I am “confident that what we’re dealing with is the drugs-yobs [in French, narco-racaille]” stated Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau in a statement delivered Thursday morning. We have not been declared at war by them. With our new anti-drug trafficking statute, we launched war on them. They are aware that their wallets will be impacted.
Gangs burned automobiles outside prisons and a jail officer training facility in what was clearly a three-night, coordinated scheme. Two places included the use of firearms. The initials DDPF, which stand for Droits des Prisonniers Français – Rights of French Prisoners, were spray-painted on graffiti by the attackers in several incidents.
