In his first Mass at the Vatican, Leo XIV, the newly appointed Pope, urged the Catholic Church to combat a lack of faith “desperately.” In a speech the day after he was chosen as the 267th Pope and the first US leader of the Church, he cautioned that people were moving away from religion and towards “technology, money, success, power, or pleasure. Leo claimed to have been chosen to serve as a “beacon that illuminates the dark nights of this world” as a “faithful administrator” of a church.
The 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide have rejoiced at Robert Francis Prevost’s ascent, with jubilant celebrations in his own United States and Peru, where he served for 20 years.
The new Pope stated in his Friday sermon that missionary outreach was necessary in many contexts where the Christian religion was viewed as “absurd” due to the dominance of riches, power, and technology.
“A lack of faith is often tragically accompanied by the loss of meaning in life, the neglect of mercy, appalling violations of human dignity, the crisis of the family and so many other wounds that afflict our society,” he stated in his Italian speech. In a live webcast by the Vatican government, Pope Leo, 69, spoke to the cardinals gathered in the Sistine Chapel, wearing a white papal robe with a gold accent.
