Etihad Airways of Abu Dhabi has formed a joint venture with Ethiopian Airlines to establish services between the UAE and Ethiopia, capitalising on the two nations’ booming aviation sectors. Etihad announced on Wednesday that the alliance, formed in Addis Ababa, involves a codeshare agreement and the start of additional flights between the two capitals, connecting passengers to locations in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. It further stated that the cooperation is subject to regulatory approval.
Etihad Airways will launch daily flights from Zayed International Airport to Addis Ababa Bole International Airport on October 1, while Ethiopian Airlines will begin reciprocal service on July 15, its third destination in the UAE after Dubai and Sharjah. Ethiopian presently has over 120 weekly passenger and cargo connections to the Gulf and Middle East.
Etihad Airways is planning to launch two more African services in 2025, to Tunis and Algiers, both in November. This is one among Etihad’s ten new destinations this year, which also include Atlanta, Taipei, Medan (Indonesia), Phnom Penh, Krabi (Thailand), Chiang Mai, Hanoi, and Hong Kong. Wizz Air Abu Dhabi will launch flights to Varna, Bulgaria, on March 31. On Wednesday, Mohammed Ali Al Shorafa, chairman of Etihad Aviation Group, stated that the joint venture represents a “monumental moment” in Etihad’s history and is “only the tip of the iceberg.
