Two Republican senators who had vowed to oppose Todd Blanche’s confirmation as the next US attorney general have suddenly stated that they are willing to lend their support. The senators acted after Blanche, who is currently serving as acting attorney general, publicly withdrew President Donald Trump’s plan for a fund that might have been used to reimburse anybody prosecuted in 2021 for Trump supporters’ involvement in the US Capitol riot.
We are pleased that the Department of Justice has issued a formal order terminating the anti-weaponization fund,” the two remaining senators, Thom Tillis and John Cornyn, said in a joint statement.
The action allows Blanche to be confirmed to his permanent position. The proposed $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund was unveiled earlier this year as a settlement of Trump’s lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) over the disclosure of his tax returns.
It would have allowed Trump supporters to claim compensation for what they believe politically motivated prosecutions by prior administrations. The two holdout senators were also concerned that the pact would protect the president, his family, and his businesses from IRS scrutiny of previous tax returns. They wanted the scope of that to be reduced.
