The Israeli military says it carried out a “precise strike” on Hizbollah’s primary headquarters in Beirut, destroying at least six structures.
The strikes were the most powerful seen in the Lebanese capital in the previous year, destroying six buildings and sending large plumes of orange and black smoke into the sky.
According to Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency, ten Lebanese Red Cross teams have arrived at the location of the strike. There was no immediate information on casualties from the strike.
According to Israeli army spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the main Hizbollah headquarters, which is located beneath residential structures, was the target. According to Hizbollah’s Al Manar TV, structures were reduced to rubble in the blast, which was powerful enough to rattle windows and shake several houses.
Not long before the explosion, thousands gathered in a Beirut neighbourhood for the funeral of three Hizbollah members killed in previous attacks, including a top leader.
Following Israel’s massive bombardment on Beirut’s southern suburbs, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati urged the international community to “stop” Israel from launching a “genocidal war” against Lebanon.
“This new Israeli aggression proves that the Israeli enemy doesn’t care about all the international efforts and calls for a ceasefire,” Mikati, who is in New York, said in a statement issued by his office, urging the international community to stop the “genocidal war that it (Israel) is waging on Lebanon”.
