Israel Says Hamas has Returned the Bodies of Three Servicemen Held Hostage

Israel has authenticated the identity of three dead hostages, whose remains it obtained from Hamas via the Red Cross in Gaza on Sunday. The remains of Israeli troops Col Asaf Hamami, 40, Capt Omer Neutra, 21, and Staff Sgt Oz Daniel, 19, were identified after forensic examinations, according to the prime minister’s office. According to the revelation, eight deceased Israeli and international hostages remain in Gaza.

Under the first phase of the US-brokered ceasefire agreement with Israel, which began more than three weeks ago, Hamas pledged to return all 20 live and 28 dead hostages. On Sunday night, Hamas’ military branch, the al-Qassam Brigades, handed over the remains of the three prisoners to the Red Cross, claiming they were discovered “along the route of one of the tunnels in the southern Gaza Strip.

The bodies were handed over to Israeli soldiers in Gaza before being sent to the National Centre of Forensic Medicine in Tel Aviv for identification. On Monday morning, the Israeli prime minister’s office stated that the corpses belonged to Col Hamami, Capt Neutra, and Staff Sgt Daniel. The government of Israel feels in the deep sorrow of the Hamami, Neutra and Daniel families, and all the families of those who died hostages, according to a statement.
