The President of the UAE has pardoned Bangladeshi nationals convicted of involvement in the recent riots in multiple emirates. Authorities have been instructed by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed to set up the deportation of those found guilty and to revoke their sentences.
The UAE Attorney General, Chancellor Dr Hamad Al Shamsi, has issued an order to stop the sentences from being carried out and to start the deportation process. The Attorney General emphasised that the state and its legal system safeguard the right to free speech and urged all UAE citizens to abide by the nation’s laws. He emphasised that to prevent this right from being used in ways that could be detrimental to the interests of the country and its citizens, the state offers legitimate channels for expressing opinions.
On July 22, 54 Bangladeshis who had served jail sentences related to riots and protests in the Emirates were ordered to be deported, and three Bangladeshis received life sentences.
The trio received a life sentence for organising protests and sparking riots in the United Arab Emirates to exert pressure on their government amid the ongoing unrest surrounding job reservations in Bangladesh. In addition, 53 more defendants received 10-year sentences, and one defendant received an 11-year sentence for illegally entering the country and taking part in the “gathering.”
