In his first interview since leaving the White House, Joe Biden told the BBC that “modern-day appeasement” is what the Trump administration’s insistence on Ukraine to cede land to Russia is.
He stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin thought Ukraine was a part of Russia and that “anybody that thinks he’s going to stop” if any area was given up as part of a peace agreement “is just foolish” when speaking in Delaware on Monday.
Speaking as the Allies commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day this week, Biden expressed his anxiety that President Donald Trump will cause a breakdown in US-European ties, which he said “would change the modern history of the world”.
In a lengthy interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today program, Biden was questioned about his own record on Ukraine and his decision to withdraw from the 2024 reelection race late in the campaign after a dismal debate performance fuelled doubts about his fitness and sent the Democratic Party into disarray.
When asked if he should have resigned earlier to give more time for selecting a successor, Biden responded, “I don’t think it would have mattered,” less than four months before the November election. We departed when we had a strong candidate.
