On a festival day in the central region of Sagaing, a 30-year-old protester was participating in a gathering against Myanmar’s junta on Monday when he heard the characteristic sound of fan blades slicing through the atmosphere.
A motorized paraglider, sometimes referred to as a paramotor, dropped explosives a few minutes later. The demonstrator, who wished to remain anonymous out of concern for junta reprisals, stated, “I was thrown away. At first, I believed that my entire lower body had been cut off. The legs are still there, I discovered when I touched it.
Witnesses, Amnesty International, the shadow National Unity Government, and an armed opposition group in the region all claim that the junta killed at least 20 people in the attack.
Calls for comment from a junta spokeswoman in Myanmar were not answered. In the past, the military has denied claims that it targets civilians. Since the military overthrew an elected civilian administration in 2021, the Southeast Asian country has been engulfed in demonstrations and a national armed uprising.
According to an eyewitness and spokesman for a local anti-junta armed resistance group, the attack at Sagaing’s Chaung-U township occurred just before 8 p.m. local time (9:30 a.m. ET) on Monday as villagers gathered in a field.
