At the Port of Callao in Peru, DP World has finished an extensive $400 million expansion project that will increase container handling capacity at the South Terminal by 80% and firmly establish Callao as the main entry point for international trade on the west coast of South America.
By extending the pier from 650 meters to 1,050 meters, the Bicentennial Pier expansion project makes Callao one of the few ports in South America that can handle three vessels or two mega-vessels at once.
In addition to expanding the container yard to 40 hectares, the project increases handling capacity from 1.5 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) per year to 2.7 million TEUs.
The project is essential to DP World’s goals for Latin America, which were revealed last month. With Lima as its capital and the expansion of Jorge Chávez Airport nearby, this development elevates the Port of Callao from a functional port to a leading logistics hub for the entire region.
“The completion of the Bicentennial Pier expansion marks a transformative moment for the Peruvian economy,” stated Carlos Merino, CEO of DP World in Ecuador and Peru. Over 90% of Peru’s containerized cargo is handled at the Port of Callao, the country’s economic hub. Of this cargo, 60% passes through the South Terminal. This expansion significantly increases our operational efficiency and capacity. It reinforces our commitment to boosting Peru’s connectivity and the region’s overall economic vitality when combined with other DP World ports.
