Tadweer Group in Abu Dhabi is testing its high-tech smart bins, which can provide data on waste quantity and type as well as a better understanding of community needs.
These locally made bins use sensors and advanced technology to detect what has been binned by community members as well as the fill level. The innovative bins optimise Tadweer’s collection operations by allowing it to know how much and what type of waste is inside, as well as when to empty the bins efficiently.
We are conducting a trial. It identifies each user. So it allows us to track what an individual user wastes, how much waste is generated, and the types of waste,” said Ollie Lawson, media and communications adviser at Tadweer Group, Abu Dhabi’s sole waste management provider.
Residents must register on an official portal and create an account by providing basic information such as their name and address. They can then open the smart bin using the barcode or QR code scanner and dispose of their waste. The type of waste is identified and its weight calculated. The Tadweer centre can then use the information to determine when the bin is full and empty it accordingly.
“The smart bins can track how much waste is being deposited. The sensors can tell us how full it is becoming. As a result, waste collectors must only visit the facility when it is full, rather than on a regular basis. This reduces the number of times our trucks go out and lowers carbon emissions.
