One of American Airlines’ engines caught fire Thursday evening, sending thick black smoke billowing into the air. Dozens of passengers were forced to stand on the wing as the jet was evacuated at Denver International Airport.
The Federal Aviation Administration stated that American Airlines Flight 1006, a Boeing 737-800 carrying 172 passengers and 6 crew members, was diverted to Denver at approximately 5:15 p.m. local time after the crew reported “engine vibrations.” The flight was headed from Colorado Springs to Dallas-Fort Worth.
According to air traffic control audio from LiveATC.net, the captain of the aircraft informed Denver air traffic authorities just before landing that the airplane was having engine problems but that it was not an emergency. A few minutes after the jet touched down, the situation swiftly got out of hand when someone on the radio shouted, “Mayday, Mayday, Mayday! Mayday! … fire in the engine! A representative at Denver International Airport told CNN that the aircraft had reached gate C38. According to the speaker, all passengers were evacuated and the fire was put out.
As smoke filled the air, photos from the event show scores of passengers getting out of the plane and standing on the wing. Reuters released a video showing several passengers evacuating the aircraft via a slide.
