After days of severe warnings from experts, US President Donald Trump has minimised the risks associated with artificial intelligence.During a visit to Ireland, Trump stated, “You have a lot of very negative forces that are bringing it up that shouldn’t be bringing it up and they’re bringing up things that won’t happen.” A former anthropological researcher issued one of the warnings, stating that “there is a strong chance that we could all die in the immediate future” if the current rate of development persisted.
Leading business executives concurred and demanded a slowdown on Saturday. Trump stated, “We’re leading China on AI… and, frankly, I want to keep it that way because whoever wins AI, wins.” He did not specifically address the concept. Trump made his remarks on the same day that AI researcher Jacob Coxon, who left Anthropic a few days prior, told the BBC that employees working on the systems were “genuinely frightened” for humanity’s future.
The concept of a delay was supported by Coxon, who has previously worked with OpenAI, although he stated that coordination with China would be necessary. Sam Altman of OpenAI and Elon Musk, the owner of xAI, supported Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s caution on Saturday that research should be halted “to reduce the risk that something goes seriously wrong.” According to the CEO of Anthropic, any slowing would need to be restricted in order to prevent China from gaining ground.
