Every McDonald’s in the UK has been informed that if its owners don’t take action to safeguard employees from sexual assault, they risk legal action. Following a BBC investigation that revealed allegations of a poisonous culture of sexual assault and harassment, the equality watchdog has written to all 1,400 branches, warning them to adhere to their legal obligations or face enforcement punishment.
In January, McDonald’s employees informed us that, over a year after the company’s CEO pledged to improve behavior at the fast-food business, they were still subjected to sexual harassment. McDonald’s stated that it is “committed” to taking all necessary steps to guarantee a secure workplace for each and every employee.
One current McDonald’s employee, who works for a franchise restaurant in southwest Scotland, was questioned by the BBC about his thoughts on the letter. He expressed his hope that the intervention will result in “concrete change” for individuals such as himself.
The 19-year-old employee, who we’ll call Alan, informed us in January that he had frequently been the target of “homophobic slurs” and “degrading and humiliating” verbal abuse from his coworkers. Alan is still employed there. He claims that not much has changed and that he wishes to “get away” from it.
