Following a game of golf on the second full day of his visit to Scotland, Donald Trump reached an agreement with the head of the European Commission. The US president signed the agreement with Ursula von der Leyen at his opulent Turnberry property, stating, “It’s going to bring us closer together… it’s a partnership in a sense. Von der Leyen also described it as a “huge deal” reached after “tough negotiations.” The deal puts the US tariff rate on imports from Europe at 15% across the board.
Beginning August 1, the European Union faced a 30% levy on its exports to the United States. Before entering the trade discussions, journalists had asked Trump if Israel should do more to let food into Gaza, where more than 100 people have died of starvation since the conflict began.
Trump did not explicitly address the issue, instead stating that the US donated $60 million for food two weeks earlier “and nobody even acknowledged [it]”. “You should at least say thank you,” he said. Despite the rainy weather, the US president completed 18 holes at the resort earlier with visitors and family, including his son Eric. He was trailed by almost two dozen buggies, several of which carrying bodyguards and other personnel.
