The death of a content producer during a live stream has prompted French authorities to launch an investigation into the Australian video platform Kick. Last week, Jean Pormanove, also known as Raphaël Graven, was discovered dead in a house close to Nice. He gained notoriety for videos in which he appeared to be subjected to assault and humiliation.
Whether Kick intentionally published “videos of deliberate attacks on personal integrity” will be the subject of the investigation, according to the Paris prosecutor. According to a Kick representative, the company was aware of the probe and seeking legal counsel.
The prosecutor’s probe will also look into whether Kick complied with the Digital Services Act of the European Union, which requires platforms to alert authorities if someone’s safety or life is in danger.
According to the AFP news agency, Clara Chappaz, France’s minister for digital matters, made a separate announcement stating that the government would sue the platform for “negligence” in failing to restrict “dangerous content.
