TV Station Owners Rehire Jimmy Kimmel’s Post-Ban Show

Two of the biggest local TV station owners in the United States announced that they will be resuming the broadcast of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, which will now be shown throughout the United States. For almost a week, Sinclair and Nexstar, the owners of numerous stations connected to national broadcaster ABC, had suspended the program due to Kimmel’s remarks regarding the tragic murder of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk.

Following a brief suspension due to his remarks, ABC itself brought the late-night talk program back, and both declared it will be resumed on Friday. The ruling demonstrates the strength and sway that local station owners and national networks have over one another. Local stations depend on networks to create popular programming that will attract viewers, while networks rely on local stations to air their shows in order to generate advertising revenue.

Even though almost 25% of ABC stations did not broadcast Kimmel’s comeback program because of the ongoing Nexstar and Sinclair restrictions, the show’s viewership more than quadrupled. According to Sinclair, “thoughtful feedback from viewers, advertisers, and community leaders” led to the decision to bring the talk show back.
