Indonesia and Malaysia have blocked Elon Musk’s AI tool Grok after it was widely misused to create manipulated and sexually explicit images of women and minors. These are the first countries to take such action against the tool, following growing global concern over its so-called “digital undressing” feature.
The ban comes after Grok was linked to a viral trend in which users asked the chatbot to generate deepfake images that appeared suggestive, obscene, and non-consensual. Indonesia’s digital minister, Meutya Hafid, said the decision was made to protect women, children, and the public from the dangers of fake pornographic content created using artificial intelligence.
Malaysia announced a temporary ban a day later, citing repeated misuse of Grok to produce content that was obscene, offensive, and harmful. Officials highlighted that some of the manipulated images involved women and minors, raising serious ethical and legal concerns. Both Indonesia and Malaysia are Muslim-majority countries with strict laws against pornography.
When asked to comment on the bans, Grok’s parent company, xAI, responded briefly by dismissing the reports. Earlier, Elon Musk and xAI said they were addressing the issue by suspending accounts that violated rules and by working with local governments and law enforcement. However, users continued to report large numbers of sexually suggestive images generated through the tool.
