When Zohran Mamdani took office as mayor of New York City, supporters and critics alike questioned how the 34-year-old democratic socialist would govern, especially after delivering an unapologetically progressive inauguration speech in which he said he would not “abandon my principles for fear of being deemed radical”.
In his first weeks in office, however, Mamdani has adopted a more cautious and measured approach. He has embraced policy wins even when they fall short of his original vision and has shown restraint in situations where he might previously have taken a more forceful public stance.
At Governor Kathy Hochul’s State of the State address, Mamdani stood to applaud when she announced funding for an expansion of pre-kindergarten programmes, a move that partially aligns with his campaign goals. He remained seated, however, when Hochul outlined what she described as “transformative investments” without raising taxes, an issue on which he and his supporters have been outspoken.
Mamdani’s recent texts and phone calls with President Donald Trump following their Oval Office meeting have drawn attention, but he has also been in frequent contact with Hochul, who is among the officials helping him secure early progress on elements of his agenda.
