Following threats of legal action from Disney and protests from other entertainment companies, Chinese technology behemoth ByteDance has vowed to restrict a contentious artificial intelligence (AI) video-making tool.
Videos created with the most recent version of the app Seedance have been more popular online in recent days. Many have received praise for their realism. However, some Hollywood studios have expressed concern about the trend, accusing the designers of the AI platform of copyright violation.
On Friday, Disney issued a cease-and-desist letter to ByteDance, accusing it of providing Seedance with a “pirated library” of the studio’s trademarked properties, including Marvel and Star Wars. Disney’s lawyers accused ByteDance of engaging in a “virtual smash-and-grab” of its intellectual property, which included Marvel, Star Wars, and different cartoon characters.
On Monday, ByteDance stated to the BBC that they “respect intellectual property rights and have heard concerns regarding Seedance 2.0.”We are strengthening current protections to prevent people from using intellectual property and likeness without permission. ByteDance did not answer to concerns about the precautions it intends to deploy.
