Iran increases the Minimum Wage by 60% When Household Budgets are Severely Damaged by Conflict and Sanctions

Iran’s minimum wage was raised by 60% on Monday, from 103 million rials (€67.5) to 166 million rials (€109), according to Labor Minister Ahmad Meydari. The action, which is intended to assist offset skyrocketing living expenses, comes months after economic hardship-driven protests, as well as in the midst of worsening conditions brought on by the continuous conflict between the US and Israel and increased sanctions.

According to credible reports, the IRGC severely suppressed protests in Iran in early 2026, killing at least 36,000 people. According to reports, the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ordered security personnel to “crush the protests by any means necessary” and approved the use of live fire against demonstrators.

The Iranian government’s attempt to stabilize society is shown in the minimum wage rise, which is a direct response to pressure from labor organizations. Many workers covered by the Iranian Labour Law can no longer afford basic items due to the rial’s current exchange rate of about 1.35 million per US dollar. The IRGC package also includes a rise in family and kid allowances.

This change will go into effect on March 20, the Persian New Year, which corresponds to the year 1405 in the Solar Hijri calendar. Iran and Afghanistan have been using the Persian calendar, a solar calendar, since 622 AD.
