A drilling ship operated by the Turkish government is scheduled to arrive off the coast of Somalia on Friday, and the country says it is prepared to start its first offshore oil drilling operations. The action comes after a Turkish research vessel successfully completed seismic surveys last year.
Dahir Shire, Somalia’s minister of petroleum, called the move toward what would be the nation’s first offshore drilling a “historic milestone in our offshore energy journey… A new chapter begins” in a post on X.
If the drilling is successful, it will uncover offshore oil deposits and help the nation’s economic recovery as a major player in the regional energy market, according to the foreign ministry. On its first international voyage, the drilling ship Çağrı Bey of the Turkish Petroleum Corporation is sailing into Somalia’s territorial waters in the Arabian Sea.
At locations identified in recent assessments detailing the nation’s hydrocarbon potential, it will conduct deepwater drilling. This indicates that Somalia is prepared to commence exploratory drilling, starting with our most attractive offshore opportunities,” Shire stated. He went on to say that the government will make sure that the advantages of oil drilling improve people’s quality of life and contribute to national development.
