During a visit to Cameroon, Pope Leo claimed that the globe was “being ravaged by a handful of tyrants” and denounced politicians that spend billions on wars in remarkably powerful remarks.
While visiting an area devastated by a deadly insurgency, the pope denounced individuals he claimed had exploited “the very name of God” for their personal benefit. The comments were made a few days after a high-profile altercation with US President Donald Trump, who wrote a long critique of the Pope, who has been an outspoken opponent of the US-Israeli military effort in Iran.
Trump’s threat that “a whole civilization will die” if Iran did not comply with US demands to end the conflict and open the Strait of Hormuz had alarmed the Pope. Leo, who was born in the United States last year, has also questioned the Trump administration’s immigration policy in the past.In a Truth Social post at the time, Trump said, “Leo needs to get his act together as Pope.
At the beginning of his visit of Africa, the Pope assured reporters that he would continue to advocate for peace rather than engage in a discussion with Trump. The Pope denounced politicians who “turn a blind eye to the fact that billions of dollars are spent on killing and devastation, yet the resources needed for healing, education, and restoration are nowhere to be found” during a speech in Cameroon.
