Foreign Office personnel have been accused by Sir Keir Starmer of purposefully and persistently hiding the fact that Lord Mandelson first failed security screening for the position of US ambassador.
The prime minister told MPs that he would not have made the appointment if he had known. Last Tuesday, Sir Keir learned that the Foreign Office had approved Lord Mandelson for the position notwithstanding the security vetting agency’s recommendation.
The PM should step down, according to Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, who claims he has “thrown his staff and officials under the bus” rather of “taking responsibility.” She claimed Sir Keir should have updated the record last week “at the earliest opportunity” and accused him of misrepresenting the House of Commons when he had previously assured MPs that “full due process” was followed during the appointment. The PM maintained that he had not misled the Commons.
According to the Ministerial Code, any unintentional mistake must be fixed “at the earliest opportunity” and ministers who intentionally mislead Parliament are expected to step down.
