The European People’s Party (EPP) and the Socialists and Democrats (S&D), the two biggest parties in the European Parliament, are at odds over the EU-US trade agreement after the most recent attempt to put it into effect failed last week.
In an effort to refine the specifics of the agreement, the EPP has, in recent days, attempted to advance the next round of negotiations between the European Parliament and EU member states.
However, according to persons acquainted with the situation who spoke to Euronews, Bernd Lange, the German Socialist MEP who leads the Trade Committee, rejected the request and insisted on preserving May 19 as the date for the next round of negotiations.
In accordance with the agreement reached last summer in Turnberry between US President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Trump has given the Europeans until July 4th to complete it, which would lower EU taxes on US exports to zero and cap US tariffs at 15%.
MEPs generally anticipate a favorable resolution prior to Trump’s deadline, but the dispute over when the next negotiations will take place reveals varying opinions across political factions regarding the severity of the situation.
