US President Donald Trump has threatened to levy a 100% import tariff on any European countries that imposes a digital services tax on American tech titans. Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that “many European countries” have been debating implementing such a charge and some were close to doing so.
The severe sanctions would be implemented immediately and would “completely supersede” any current bilateral trade agreements, he said. The article is aimed at countries contemplating the “imminent adoption” of new taxes, although the specific effect on the UK was not immediately evident as London already has such a tax in place since 2020. “He said, “Please let this serve as notice that any Country that imposes such Tax will be met with a 100% TARIFF on any and all Goods from the United States of America.”
The UK’s 2% Digital Services Tax (DST) is levied on large search engines, social media platforms and online marketplaces that generate more than £500 million in global revenues from their digital businesses and more than £25 million in total UK revenues.
The measure affects some of the greatest US firms, like Apple, Google, Meta and Amazon, and raised more over £800 million in 2024–25, up from £678 million in 2023–24, the Treasury said.
