President Donald Trump’s reaction to the Supreme Court’s decision against him regarding birthright citizenship was muted by his own standards. Before endorsing legislation that would reestablish his proposed restrictions on the long-standing legal concept that anybody born in the country is a US citizen, Obama declared Tuesday’s ruling to be “too bad for our country”.
However, there is little likelihood that Congress will take action on that. Any attempt in the US Senate would very definitely be thwarted by Democrats, and even if such a bill were passed, it’s not obvious how it would pass constitutional scrutiny.
Although this ruling was a setback for Trump, it ends a term on the Supreme Court that has largely followed a recent pattern. The president has won a number of significant triumphs thanks to its conservative majority, which was solidified throughout his first term. It has systematically increased presidential authority and protected Trump and all subsequent presidents from legal action.
However, a few conservatives joined forces with the three liberal justices of the court to clearly restrict several of Trump’s most ambitious trade, immigration, and law enforcement policies issues that have been core to his political identity for more than ten years.
