World Cup Surge Stalls as US Hospitality Jobs Decrease in June

A World Cup job boom in the United States has failed to materialize, with employment in restaurants, pubs, and hotels declining in June. Analysts predicted the event, held jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, would result in a surge in leisure and hospitality jobs.

However, the sector lost 61,000 jobs last month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported on Thursday.Overall employment in the United States increased by 57,000 in June, less than predicted, while the unemployment rate fell slightly to 4.2%.

The BLS had reported early signs of an employment boom in May, with bars and restaurants hiring to preparation for the World Cup. Goldman Sachs analysts predicted that the competition will raise employment by approximately 40,000 jobs in June.

However, despite reports of traveling football fans drinking their way out of pubs around the United States, growth slowed in June. ING’s chief US economist, James Knightley, said Thursday’s results showed a “real area of weakness” in leisure and hospitality.
