A dispute has erupted in Germany after the coalition government announced revisions to sick-leave laws that require Germans to send a doctor’s letter to their employers on the first day of their illness.
Workers will no longer be able to receive the notice via phone, which was implemented in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.”The number of sick days in Germany is excessive, remarked Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Under existing guidelines, a certificate is only required if a person is unable to work for more than three days – that is, on the fourth day – however employers may request the sick note earlier.
Merz’s CDU and SPD alliance reached an agreement on the measures.”This is a difficult decision,” the chancellor explained. “But we can no longer afford this competitive disadvantage caused by long periods of absence from work.
Merz stated that the government will not allow “exorbitant amounts of sick leave in the wake of the outbreak. Germany was “returning to the arrangements we had before the coronavirus pandemic,” he told ARD TV on Thursday night.
