Fears of a “dirty deal” to end the war in Ukraine on terms that favour Moscow without Kyiv’s input have been aroused in Europe by US President Donald Trump’s “lengthy and highly productive” phone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
Ukraine would not accept a peace agreement negotiated by the US and Russia alone, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky’s statement on Thursday. He questioned the West’s “nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine” stance, which has persisted chiefly during three years of Russia’s full-scale invasion. He acknowledged that it was “not pleasant” that Trump had a conversation with Putin before phoning Kyiv. In response to a reporter’s question on Wednesday, Trump and his defence secretary Pete Hegseth have now stated that they think Ukraine will be a part of the negotiations.
The European Union’s foreign policy leader, Kaja Kallas, cautioned against a “dirty deal” or “quick fix” to end the conflict, stating that Europe and Ukraine must be at the negotiating table because no peace agreement can be carried out without their participation.
The future becomes far more dubious for NATO members from Europe. Europe has depended on the US nuclear umbrella, substantial US military forces in Europe, and the sizeable US defence budget and arms pipeline ever since the alliance was formed.
