Hundreds of people have fled the area by boat as French authorities ordered the evacuation of the entire Cap Ferret peninsula on the southwest coast. As firemen continue to combat what the local prefect has called a “XXL fire” in the Gironde region, tens of thousands of people are being evacuated from the tourist attraction west of Bordeaux. The fires started on Tuesday and have been burning for days. According to officials, the flames have destroyed 10,000 hectares, or over 25,000 acres.
A national emergency has been proclaimed by the Spanish government in response to wildfires that are out of control in a number of regions near Madrid, the country’s capital. Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the president of the Madrid community, responded to the fires by calling them “the worst fire in the history of the region.” Pedro Sánchez, the prime minister of Spain, described a “dramatic situation” and advised people to exercise extreme caution. At Villa del Prado and San Martín de Valdeiglesias, three flames were raging west of Madrid. 40,000 people had either been evacuated from the Cap Ferret peninsula, which has the Atlantic on one side and the Bay of Arcachon on the other, according to French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez.
