The seventeenth amendment to Hungary’s Fundamental Law has been signed by Tamás Sulyok, ending his own term as the republic’s president. The head of state called the constitutional modification that forced his resignation “unprecedented and shameful” in a Facebook speech. This amendment ends the current President of the Republic’s tenure in office with a single sentence. That sentence adds to the list of coerced Gordian-knot solutions that will go down in history as serious and disgraceful instances of political power abuse, he said.
The statute that forced him to leave was harshly criticized by the departing head of state, who described it as an unprecedented restriction on the right to vote and an open assault on the independence of institutions and the rule of law. He signed the amendment after realizing that it would be illegal to refuse to do so. “My signature is the final seal of my presidential obligations and of my full and unconditional respect for the institution of the presidency,” he said. It indicates that I have never broken Hungary’s Fundamental Law and have always complied with it. However, it will also serve as enduring evidence that the fundamental principles of a democratic society—the separation of powers, democracy, and the rule of law—have been subverted for the sake of power. The power that modified the constitution has sole responsibility for this decision, the leaving Sulyok stated.
