Opposition politicians have called the government’s acquisition of a pre-owned C$28.9 million ($21 million; £15.5 million) private jet a “gravy plane” and have criticized Doug Ford, the leader of the Canadian province of Ontario. The Toronto Star newspaper broke the story of the acquisition on Friday, and the premier’s office later confirmed it in a statement to the media. Built in Canada in 2016, the aircraft is an executive Bombardier Challenger 650. According to Ford’s office, it will be mostly utilized for his travels, including trips to the US “to help make the case against President (Donald) Trump’s tariffs”.
Ford’s political rivals criticized the acquisition, calling it “out of touch”In a post on X, Marit Stiles, the head of the left-leaning Ontario New Democratic Party, stated, “He should be flying economy like the rest of us.” “Ontarians are struggling to make rent, to pay for groceries, just to get by, and the premier of this province thinks now is a great time to buy a private jet?” she continued later on a morning breakfast television program. I believe the timing is awful. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation, a taxpayer advocacy group, has urged the prime minister to “stick to flying commercial” and undo the purchase. In a statement, Ford’s office told the BBC that the aircraft will be utilized “for government business only.
