According to CNN, there were at least four fatalities from the shooting at a high school in Georgia on Wednesday. CNN reported that the shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, left dozens of people injured in addition to the four dead, citing anonymous law enforcement officials briefed on the incident. Not all wounds looked to be from gunshots; some seemed to be from people hurt during the escape.
According to a statement from the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office, one suspect was in custody. Sheriff Jud Smith stated, “What we see behind us is an evil thing today,” at a brief press conference held on school property.
A representative for Barrow County Schools stated that the situation seemed to be under control and that students were being released at noon.
Student Sergio Caldera, a witness, was cited by ABC News as saying he heard gunshots while in chemistry class. The 17-year-old Caldera told ABC that after one of his teachers opened the door, another one ran in and told her to close it “because there’s an active shooter.”
Someone repeatedly hammered on his classroom door and yelled for it to be opened as the teachers and students crowded into the space. More gunfire and screaming were audible to Caldera after the knocking stopped. Later on, he said, his class was evacuated to the football pitch at the school.
