Houthi Rebels Claim that US Strikes on a Yemeni Port Killed 74 People in the Bloodiest Attack Under Trump

In what looks to be the bloodiest such occurrence since President Donald Trump started a fresh military campaign against the rebels last month, the Iran-backed Houthis claim that US airstrikes on Yemen’s Ras Isa oil terminal have killed at least 74 people and injured over 100.

The Houthis said the strike targeted civilian workers and published gruesome footage of the aftermath. The explosion launched fireballs upwards and enveloped the building in flames.

US Central Command justified the action in a statement issued Friday, stating that the goal of the strike was to “deprive the Iran-backed Houthi terrorists of illegal revenue that has funded Houthi efforts to terrorise the entire region for over 10 years and eliminate this source of fuel for them.

The attack on Ras Isa, located in the Hodeida governorate in western Yemen, marks a significant escalation in a campaign that began on March 15. Nevertheless, neither the total number of strikes nor their numbers have been made public.

A vital oil pipeline from Marib, a government-controlled area abundant in energy resources, ends at the port of Ras Isa. The civil conflict has prevented oil exports, but the Houthis have been using the infrastructure for years to purchase gasoline. The Ras Isa bombing was the “first mass-casualty incident the Houthis have openly acknowledged and publicised,” according to Yemen researcher Mohammed al-Basha.
