Research Indicates that Teen ChatGPT use is “Unacceptable Risk,” According to OpenAI

The goal of OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Teens was to encourage healthier use of the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, however recent study has shown that its crucial safety measures are inadequate. In August, the big AI company implemented a number of safety measures for teenagers, such as new parental notifications for problematic use and restrictions on emotional dependence.

OpenAI said on Wednesday that average teen use of ChatGPT was comparatively low and leaned toward “learning” activities. However, a study published that same day by the nonprofit Common Sense Media discovered that ChatGPT continues to provide a “unacceptable risk” for teenagers because to the frequent failure of safety mechanisms, including as alerting parents to chats involving self-harm.

Users who were recognised as being between the ages of 13 and 17 will be able to opt into “features to promote healthy use and additional controls for parents” when OpenAI released ChatGPT for Teens this summer. Teen ChatGPT users are prohibited from using romantic or other language that would promote “emotional dependence” by these features, which also prohibit the tool from suggesting that it was in any way conscious. Additionally, there are restrictions on sexualised imagery and “reminders” for teenagers who exchange images deemed “sensitive.” Additionally, if a parent has linked to their child’s ChatGPT account, the features are designed to notify them of chats that address self-harm or disordered eating. According to OpenAI, these features have led to an increase in learning-focused teen use, from study aids to guidance on school assignments.
