The UAE has significantly increased the share of clean energy production in the overall energy mix, with Suhail Bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, stating that the country reached 27.83 percent in 2023, falling short of the target of 32 percent by 2030.
Al Mazrouei stated, “From 2019 to 2022, the UAE has succeeded in doubling its renewable energy capacity as part of the UAE Energy Strategy to triple the installed capacity by 2030, towards our commitment to achieve the energy transition targets as per the UAE Consensus at COP28,” in an interview with the Emirates News Agency (WAM) in advance of the World Utilities Congress 2024, which gets underway in Abu Dhabi tomorrow.
He continued that the UAE made significant progress in renewable energy competitive indicators in 2023, “achieving a quantum leap from sixth to second place in the indicator of per capita energy consumption from renewable energy sources in the latest Statistical Review of World Energy prepared by the Energy Institute.” Installed renewable energy capacity reached 6.1 GW, a remarkable 70% growth.
Regarding the UAE’s dedication to encouraging investment in clean and renewable energy, Al Mazrouei said: Our finished new and renewable energy projects are estimated to be worth over Dhs45 billion in total. The value of the most recent projects currently operational is not even included in this figure.
