The cease-fire proposal announced by President Joe Biden, which the US claims Israel has accepted, is welcomed by the resolution sponsored by the US. It demands that Hamas, the Palestinian organization, agree to the three-phase plan.
Israel and Hamas are urged by the resolution “to implement its terms without delay and without condition fully,” which was adopted with the support of 14 of the 15 Security Council members and Russia’s abstention.
It’s unclear if Israel and Hamas will agree to carry out the plan, but both sides are under more pressure to approve it given the resolution’s strong support in the UN’s most influential body.
Regarding the resolution’s implementation, Hamas declared that it was happy to see it passed and prepared to cooperate with negotiators in indirect talks with Israel. Though it emphasized that Hamas would keep fighting Israeli occupation and working toward the establishment of a “fully sovereign” Palestinian state, the statement was one of the group’s most vital to date.
Without explicitly mentioning the resolution, a senior Israeli diplomat informed the council that Israel would not back down and that “we will continue until all of the hostages are returned and until Hamas’ military and governing capabilities are dismantled.”
Additionally, it means that Israel won’t participate in pointless talks that go on forever and are used by Hamas as a time-wasting tactic, according to Minister Counsellor Reut Shapir Ben Naftaly.
