Over 300 Flights Were Canceled Due to An Indian Airline’s Staff Shortage

Since Tuesday, more than 300 flights have been canceled by India’s largest airline, IndiGo, leaving thousands of passengers stranded across the country. The busiest airports in India—Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru were the most severely affected.

The airline attributed the delays to weather, new crew rostering regulations, and technical issues. With more than 60% of the domestic market, the low-cost airline connects big cities with smaller ones.

According to IndiGo, in order to stabilize operations, it made “calibrated adjustments” to its schedule until Friday. 33 IndiGo flight cancellations in Delhi, 85 in Mumbai, and 73 in Bengaluru were reported by the ANI news agency on Thursday morning. Many travelers complained on X (previously Twitter) after videos of irate customers went viral on social media.

The airline’s typical reaction to the majority of complaints on X was, “Our operations are dependent on several factors, some of which are beyond our control and may impact the schedule. The Federation of Indian Pilots, however, stated that other airlines are essentially unaffected and that the cancellations “cannot be attributed” to the new regulations.
